If you own a very fancy home, you probably have a double shower unit.  Otherwise known as ‘his and her’ showers and sinks, these features feel very luxurious.  Reversely, large double toilets are not so much of a luxury feature.  Back in the 1800s, and early 1900s, however, farmers would have to relieve themselves while sitting right next to their friend or coworkers.  Double toilet outhouses were much easier and cheaper to build than building two separate bathroom units.  Since more than one bathroom was needed, this was the perfect solution.  Installing these double toilets posed a challenge, in that they had to be constructed above a dugout latrine in the ground.
