Video Referees Coming to Soccer
Football (soccer) has resisted the need for video techmology to help referees, yet every time poor refereeing decisions are made in big games the it shows again the need for video technology. A recent example was shown the match between England and Germany in the football World Cup finals in South Africa. England were losing to Germany by two goals to one in the first half when a fantastic Frank Lampard shot hit the cross bar, bounced down more than a foot behind the line before bouncing back up to the cross-bar and then being caught by the goalie. Smehow the referee and linesman didn’t think it went over the line and ruled it as not a goal. All the crowd could see on the big screens that it was a goal and so could all the viewers at home but not the idiot referee. If we want the game to be well refeered and for the right team to win then surely Seb Blatter needs to get the football message that it is time for video referees.
Video refs work well in other sports. In rugby union any disputed decisions are put to a referee with a video player and an answer comes back within a few seconds. For some reason FIFA president Seb Blatter has blocked all attempts to even try video refs in football. This must change if we want the game of football to be fairer and better.
