Crescent Beach State Park: The Surf’s Not Up!
Perennially one of Mainers’ “favorite beaches” in annual media surveys, Crescent Beach is located about 8 miles south of Portland within Cape Elizabeth. If you want to go for a relaxing summer swim, then Crescent Beach State Park (part of the Maine State Parks system) is the perfect place to take a dip in Maine’s brisk Atlantic waters! But if you’re looking to shoot the curl or hang ten with the wild wahines and surfer dudes of the North, this is not your spot. With the becalming effect of Richmond Island and a breakwater, the mom-friendly gentle ankle-slapping breakers at Crescent Beach are almost always small and non-life-threatening. The beach is sloped gently and gradually; perfect for small children and folks who don’t consider themselves strong swimmers. Either way, Park lifeguards are on duty every day during the summer until 6 pm. While there, you will enjoy its sand dunes and its mile-long crescent shaped beach. While the park is closed to vehicles in the off-season, it remains popular with hikers, snowshoers, and cross-country skiers.
